The Garbage Heap of History, 2012

In 1999, Valera & Natasha Cherkashin created an underwater installation in the reflecting pool of the World Bank Headquarters.  It was dedicated to the individual European currencies that were replaced by the Euro.  It was a kind of Atlantis, a farewell to the portraits of outstanding people who made significant contributions to the cultures of their countries and the world.  These banknotes ceased with the introduction of the Euro and along with them, also went the tradition to place portraits on monies circulated in Europe.
In 2012, at the Myshako winery, the artists discovered a wonderful garbage heap.  Also they discovered a number of boxes with old labels and other details of decoration for wine bottles that were no longer used and had become trash.  The Cherkashins were reminded of their earlier installation Goodbye Favorite European Portraits:  Hello Euro and combined these two ideas with the creation of a new installation, The Garbage Heap of History.
